Year 7 Football

Monday evening saw the newly formed Year 7 football team represent Southam College for the very first time, playing in the English Schools cup against Arden Academy from Solihull.

The wet weather conditions suited Southam in the early stages of the game with Harrison M creating problems with direct running as well and Ewan and Dan combining well down the left. Southam created a few half chances before taking the lead through Logan who finished well after a good move. This goal encouraged Southam to keep passing and press high. A second goal was on the cards after a few more opportunities had been created. The second goal did come from Liam who drilled the ball into the roof of the net after good work down the right hand side. Southam came close again through Leon and Ewan. Unfortunately, Arden pulled a goal back on the break which unsettled Southam’s rhythm. A fantastic save from Oliver kept the score at 2-1. Arden broke again and scored shortly before half time to make the score 2-2.

Southam started the second half well and forced a few half chances but were undone by a long ball over the top which was dispatched by the striker. Southam heads didn’t drop and they continued to pass to create opportunities. Josh made a brilliant save in a one on one situation and from a long range effort. A great bit of skill from Ewan and Dan fed Liam who beat three players to tuck the ball into the bottom corner to tie the game again. Southam sensed they could get the winner and kept piling forward with Harrison M, Logan, Ewan, Harrison and Leon all going close and forcing the keeper to make saves.

However, Arden caught Southam on the break once more, with the striker using the wet conditions to fire a skidding shot into the bottom corner to seal a dramatic 4-3 win in the last minute of the game.

A real tough result for the Year 7’s to take losing in the last minute despite being the better team for large parts of the game. We are extremely proud of how the boys stuck together and battled in the horrific conditions.

We have no doubt that if they continue to play the way they did, they will win lots of games in their time at Southam College.
