Year 9 Rugby

Southam V KES Birmingham

The Yr 9 Rugby Team has their first fixture of the season at home this Saturday against King Edward’s School. It was fantastic to get a full strength team out on a perfect morning for Rugby. The team certainly looked as though they had missed the chance to represent the school and they were wonderfully supported by a vocal set of parents.

As expected, KES were a well drilled team, who put our forwards under pressure from the off. Some spirited tackling and forceful runs countered the KES possession, but as the half wore on, KES were able to exploit some holes in our defence and scored 4 times before the break.

A half-time team talk gave us renewed belief and we immediately put the KES side under pressure and on to the back foot. Eventually, after a number of line breaking runs, Ioan E. burst through to score our first try. This galvanised our team further, and Ben H was the next to score, having broken through the KES defence with a forceful run was Ben H. The Southam tails were well and truly up now, but KES still threatened our line. This time however, they were thwarted by some heroic last ditch tackles. Following some more breaks down the KES lines, Southam were awarded a penalty when Tyler A. was brought down by a trip as he burst up the blind side. This presented Southam with the perfect attacking platform, and Alfie McG needed no second invitation as he crashed over the line to bring up to within one score of KES.

Unfortunately, time was now against us, and though both side were able to mount final attacks on each others line, neither were able to score again. A fantastic game finished 15-20 to KES, but all player from both side can hold their heads up high to a magnificent spectacle of a game. Man of the match has to go to our captain, Ioan E., but in truth it could have been any number of our players.

Many, many thanks to all the patents who came to support and for Simon and Jason who helped on the day. Our next game is on 6th Nov against Fairfax away.
